Review

Spin (3/04, p.97) - "Taut grooves set on Al Green cruise control, lots of havin'-fun-in-the-studio byplay, and the occasional spritz of rude fuzz-box guitar to give all the gold-leaf detailing some shape." - Grade: B
Entertainment Weekly (2/27/04, p.99) - "[O]ffers 10-gallon Goth laments..." - Rating: A-
Q (3/04, p.112) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Intricate, multi-layered and uplifting..."
Uncut (2/04, pp.68-9) - 4 stars out of 5 - "AW CMON methodically works towards the emotional peak of the stunning closing track, 'Action Figure', which Wagner sings beautifully..."
Uncut (p.74) - Ranked #20 in Uncut's "Best New Albums of 2004" - "[A] perfect fusion between the string-driven country-soul of NIXON and the low-key intimacy of 2002's IS A WOMAN."
CMJ (2/9/04, p.4) - "[Features] songs that span from from piano-driven alt-country [to] sublime string-tinged ballads..."
Mojo (Publisher) (2/04, p.90) - 4 stars out of 5 - "The vocal songs are interesting....The lavish string arrangements, late-night melodies and Wagner's deep, muttering, falsetto-free voice bring to mind Tindersticks."

Title Note

Lambchop includes: Kurt Wagner (vocals, guitar); William Tyler (acoustic guitar, guitar); Tony Crow (piano); Matt Swanson (bass); Sam Baker (drums); Marc Trovillion.

Recorded at The Beech House, Nashville, Tennessee in 2003.

In their greatest display of ambition, Lambchop released two albums of new material simultaneously in 2004, AW CMON and NO YOU CMON. Leader Kurt Wagner's cracked croak of a singing voice is the perfect instrument to deliver the inscrutable-but-gorgeous amalgams of sadcore indie-rock, orchestral pop, and Quiet Storm-style R&B that occupy AW CMON. It should be pointed out that despite the band's Nashville home base and the occasional presence of steel guitar, this is not, as many people misleadingly suggest, alt-country.
