Title Note

On AVATAR, pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba continues his explorations of intricate group improvisation of the highest level. Mixing together elements of post bop, avant jazz, even chamber music (note the beautiful "Aspiring to Normalcy"), Rubalcaba leads his crack quintet through modern jazz territory fringed with sharp turns, carefully constructed space, and gorgeous melodic interludes. Saxophonist Yosvany Terry and trumpeter Mike Rodriguez peel off dazzling lines, while the rhythm section adds color, texture, and groove.
