Various Artists - August Rush Soundtrack
A wise woman once referred to an unnecessarily sentimental film, as schmaltzy, and I pay homage to her outstanding vocabulary use by revisiting the idea of schmaltzy while listening to the soundtrack for August Rush. I was not entirely impressed with the soundtrack, which is ok as I wasn’t entirely impressed with the film.
Like every cake some pieces have more icing than others, and that concept prevails here as well. Certain tracks such as the Khaki King’s efforts “Bari Improv” and “Ritual Dance” are great choices, as well as the hidden number fifteen “Moondance” by Chris Botti, however the proverbial buck as they say, stops there.
This is not an album filled with wonderful creations more than a fast food patty suited for its stale bun of a movie. The songs are contrived and when pulled from their original context and mashed together on this CD, sound as though they reflect the soundtrack to a senior year book video.
To remain fair the production on this release is outstanding and the sheer unimportant nature of the song collection seems to be as a result of song choice and of course not the individual artists. If you must, listen to this soundtrack in the car and experience a nice background sound on your calm drive to work. However once you’re out of the Toyota, leave August behind, and look for something that will actually provide a rush.
