Betty Carter Artist Snapshot:

Originally known as Betty Bebop from her work with Parker and Gillespie in the 1940s, the singer worked with Miles Davis and Max Roach in the 1950s, but often had trouble finding work due to her complex, demanding style. In the 1970s she started her own group, which would become a rigorous training ground for young musicians, and finally gained a full measure of success in the 1980s. Her swooping, melismatic scatting make her voice one of the most distinctive in jazz.

Title Note

For Betty Carter, songs are vehicles for her talent. If something doesn't fit her conception of how her performance should be, then she changes it. Nothing is sacred; and yet, somehow, nothing is profaned. Standards from the Great American Songbook are reworked with seemingly dismissive ease.

The album title is significant: woe betide any audience that risks not being "with" Betty Carter. In command, on display, this tough, restless tigress of jazz overshadows her contemporaries, What's more, her statement that she can see no-one coming along to challenge her supremacy looks increasingly true as the years pass by.
