Title Note

ATARI TEENAGE RIOT 1992-2000 spans the near decade-long career of the infamous Berlin electro-punks. Initially formed as a reaction to the growing neo-Nazi influence in Germany's rave scene, Atari Teenage Riot's confrontational anti-fascist political agenda influenced a new generation of D.I.Y. techno producers to embrace punk's ethic of harder-faster-louder, signaling teenage rebellion's paradigm shift away from three-chord punk to computer sequencers.

If A.T.R.'s industrial-strength noise blasts and breakneck BPMs sometimes lack subtlety, leader Alec Empire's razor-sharp production helps to lend a stark clarity to the anarchic proceedings. Tracks like "Deutschland Has Gotta Die" and "Delete Yourself" pair distorted breakbeats over angry chants from vocalists Hanin Elias and MC Carl Crack. Reacting to the politically apathetic, escapist values of much commercial pop music, A.T.R. created anthems for inciting--if not riots--a youth-culture revolution.
