Title Note

Composer/Lyricist: Stephen Sondheim.

Original Broadway Cast: James Barbour, Mario Cantone, Michael Cerveris, Mary Catherine Garrison, Neil Patrick Harris, Alexander Gemignani, Jeffrey Kuhn, Denis O'Hare, Mark Kudisch.

Recording information: The Hit Factory, New York, New York (06/07/2004).

Stephen Sondheim is not someone to shy away from difficult raw material on which to base a musical, and ASSASSINS stands as the high watermark of unlikely sources for Broadway shows. Wasting no time revealing its viciously satirical bite, the opening scene is a fairground with a carnival barker inviting potential customers to "C'mere and kill a president" in "Everybody's Got the Right." In fact, almost the entire cast of characters here attempted--and, in some cases, succeeded in--just that, from John Wilkes Booth (Lincoln) to John Hinkley (Reagan).

It is certainly a stretch to sympathize with this murderous, motley crew. But Sondheim's catchy melodies and pungent, punchy lyrics--some of which contain actual president and assassin quotes--coupled with a crack, committed cast, bring about the unlikely scenario of being entertained by killers. The CD includes a new song added for the 2004 revival ("Something Just Broke"), which fills in for the rest of America's reaction when the chilling news of an assassination arrives. This is a provocative, nearly heretical cast album with many stirring performances.
