Publisher's note

A struggling writer lodging in a seedy LA hotel, Arturo Bandini falls in love with Camilla Lopez, a elusive, unstable Mexican waitress, and they embark on a strange and strained love-hate relationship that inexorably descends into madness.

Annotation

Arturo Bandini, Fante's autobiographical hero, is an aspiring writer in love with the elusive, mocking, unstable Camilla Lopez, a Mexican waitress. Finally, Bandini sees his first novel published, but when Camilla has a nervous breakdown and disappears, he rejects the life of a writer. Originally published in 1939, ASK THE DUST was adapted into a 2006 film starring Colin Farrell as Bandini and Salma Hayek as Camilla.
