Paris-born, Nigeria-raised singer-songwriter Asa (pronounced "Asha"; born Bukola Elemide) has a low, sensuous voice and a knack for neo-soul material rooted in the likes of Marvin Gaye, Roberta Flack, and Sade. Singing primarily in English (although she also occasionally performs in Yoruba), Asa draws some influence from Nigerian giants such as Fela Kuti, but her 2007 debut album fits comfortably next to contemporaries like Corinne Bailey Rae and Jill Scott.
