Miami's 2 Live Crew are arguably the most infamous group in hip-hop history. After several years of middling success as a standard Miami booty act, the group released AS NASTY AS THEY WANT TO BE in 1989. The record was filled with lyrics so outrageous and sexually explicit it made the grooves in the vinyl blush, and generated a landmark Supreme Court decision that ultimately overturned the group's previous conviction on obscenity charges. 2 Live Crew never matched the chart success that the trial helped generate; however, the album stands to this day as a pinnacle of raunch in rap. The various members, including the group's public face, Luther Campbell, remained active in the Miami rap scene for years after.
