Title Note

The title of this excellent 1990 compilation is printed on the front sleeve in Portuguese, which might lead the listener to think that it's a collection of Antonio Carlos Jobim's more traditionally Brazilian recordings, like the acoustic guitar and percussion pieces that originally made his name on such recordings as the BLACK ORPHEUS soundtrack. While there are some performances here in that traditional samba style, THE ART OF ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM is a wide-ranging--sometimes almost to the point of being scattershot--collection of interpretations of Jobim songs in a variety of settings. An orchestral "Garota de Ipanema (The Girl From Ipanema)" sits next to Astrud Gilberto's definitive vocal version of "Agua de Beber (Water To Drink)," for example. While some listeners may prefer a bit less variety, it's a tribute to Jobim's insistently melodic songs that they translate to the different musical styles so well
