Anti-Pop Consortium Artist Snapshot:

New York City's Anti-Pop Consortium--composed of MCs High Priest, M. Sayyid, and Beans--were underground hip-hop legends. With an anti-commercial streak that was near polemical, the crew created a brilliantly experimental musical stew that touched on electronic music and free jazz, among other forms. The Consortium broke up in 2002 after barely a half-decade of existence; nonetheless, their legacy is undeniable. Since the group's split, Beans has gone on to great acclaim in the underground as a solo MC, while Priest and Sayyid formed Airborn Audio.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (5/3/02, p.86) - "...With electronic soundscapes full of surprises...behind eclectic, intelligent raps, APC often sound like Kraftwerk's jiggy cousins..."
Q (4/02, p.108) - 4 out of 5 stars - "...APC prove there's much more to hip hop than gangster rhythms..."
Alternative Press (7/02, p.76) - 8 out of 10 - "...On this disc, they carve out a space somewhere between Afrika Bambaataa and Autechre..."
Magnet (p.86) - "ARRHYTHMIA showcased the group's often-skeletal musical design -- beats made of ping-pong-ball samples, one-note keyboard lines, repetitive musical themes that echoed Sparks and Kraftwerk -- and concluded a brilliant career with 'Human Shield'..."
Magnet (2/04, p.114) - "Beans, High Priest and M. Sayyid go about business as usual, tackling subjects like pop culture, dangerous women and their considerable collective rhyming prowess."
CMJ (4/1/2002, p.4) - "...Antipop Consortium manages to perfectly meld old-school hip-hop flavor...with a 21st century sound...and IDM-adorned hip-hop beats...draped with organic musical elements and insightful lyrics..."
Vibe (5/02, p.158) - 3 discs out of 5 - "...Consistently captivating. Producer E.Blaize's electro tracks are equally unorthodox, and yet magnetic. ARRHYTHMIA rewards listeners who like their music avant-garde..."
Mojo (Publisher) (5/02, p.97) - "...The form may sound perplexing, but Anti-Pop are a great deal more approachable than their spiky sonic exterior suggests..."

Title Note

Anti-Pop Consortium: Beans, Priest, Sayyid.

Producers: Anti-Pop Consortium, E. Blaize.

Earning respect in the underground American hip-hop scene in the late 1990s, Antipop Consortium eventually teamed with Warp Records and directed their sound towards the glitchy IDM with which the British label had made its name. ARRHYTHMIA is as much, if not more, an IDM record as it is a hip-hop one; the sum of the hybrid is certainly worth more than the parts. Beans, High Priest, and M. Sayyid spit cerebral lyrics over dense and inventive loops and samples. "Goldlawns" is a perfect single: the repetitiveness of the synthetic rhythm and the knowingly mundane female vocal samples make it a pop song; the rappers, however, make it something special when their flow interrupts and eventually strengthens the rhythm. ARRHYTHMIA was the last Antipop Consortium release before the group's members split for various other projects, none of which managed to capture the strange, effortless marriage of styles one finds here.

Its hard to pinpoint their signature sound, which for the most part is a positive thing. Anti-Pop push the envelope just enough to keep and peak your interest and are great at keeping you there for a while.
