Title Note

Television guitarist Tom Verlaine is one of the most innovative instrumentalists of his generation, but after his initial string of solo albums in the 1980s, he wasn't exactly prolific. Released simultaneously with SONGS AND OTHER THINGS, the all-instrumental AROUND marks Verlaine's first release since '92's also-instrumental WARM AND COOL. If finds him displaying more stylistic diversity than ever before, moving from limpid, Bill Frisell-like pastels to Ernest Ranglin-esque reggae flavors to African highlife-style patterns with ease, all the while maintaining the delicate touch and artful phrasing that have made him a guitar legend since Television's late-'70s heyday. The cliche about instrumentals is that they're soundtracks to imaginary movies; these evocative, visceral pieces are their own movies.
