SInce as early as the Ramones, punk rock has maintained both a healthy sense of humor and a penchant for cover songs. No band has taken those two concepts further than California punk supergroup Me First & the Gimme Gimmes. Consisting of members of NoFX, Swingin' Utters, Foo Fighters, and Lagwagon, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes put a punk-rock twist on all manner of decidedly un-punk pop hits. With each album maintaining a genre theme, the band has taken on show tunes, R&B songs, radio hits of the 1960s and '70s, and country music. The band also released a Bar Mitzvah-themed album in 2004 recorded live at an actual Bar Mitzvah.

On their second outing, ARE A DRAG, Me First & the Gimme Gimmes up the wackiness quotient by presenting a set of songs made famous on the stage and silver screen, often by female singers--hence the album's cheeky title and cross-dressing cover photo. Featuring vocalist Spike Slawson (Swingin' Utters), bassist Fat Mike (NOFX), and other Californian punk-pop nobility, the 1999 record includes a raucous take on "Over the Rainbow" (from THE WIZARD OF OZ) and a fast-paced rendition of "Favorite Things" (from THE SOUND OF MUSIC), resulting in a record that's ultimately even more fun than the Gimme Gimmes' first album, HAVE A BALL.
