Soundtracks are funny things. The inclusion of "This Is The Day" in 1998's THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY gave New York trio Ivy its first mainstream airplay. Ironically, the album from which that single was lifted, 1997's APARTMENT LIFE, had already flopped, and Ivy had been unceremoniously dropped from Atlantic Records' roster. In the wake of MARY's astonishing popularity, Sony quickly reissued APARTMENT LIFE with "This Is The Day" and three other tracks remixed.

Dominique Durand's alluring, accented voice and soignT lyrics meld beautifully with the sophisticated, bossa nova-influenced keyboards-and-acoustic-guitars pop of cohorts Adam Schlesinger (who is also half of the rockier Fountains of Wayne) and Adam Chase. Besides "This Is The Day," highlights include the wonderful "The Best Thing," though the Sony remix is inferior to the original Atlantic version, and the slowly unfolding "Back In Our Town." Fans of the Prefab Sprout/Smiths variety of mid-'80s UK pop will fall in love with Ivy.
