Any Time Now (CD)

A triumph of word-of-mouth enthusiasm over an official marketing plan, O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) has become one of the most popular U.S. live acts of the 2000s. They started out as just another roots-and-reggae-loving campus band in the mid-'90s, but used every opportunity they could to play live. They encouraged fans to bootleg their shows and soon became a part of a larger network of preppy/hippie jam bands that traveled the country, playing for huge audiences. Their exposure grew when they penned and performed the theme song to the hit TV show EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION. They signed to a major label in 2003, and by 2006, it was reported that they had sold over a million records in their relatively brief grassroots career.

They play with a confidence that belies their relative lack of experience, with echoes of both the Dave Matthews Band and Barenaked Ladies combining with their commercial white-boy reggae to produce a sound that's uniquely theirs.

ANY TIME NOW, a live set from Washington's 9.30 club, which includes material from their previous three albums, is a great introduction to their user-friendly college rock/reggae, which even includes a stab at Bob Marley's "Stir It Up" amid the catchy originals. Though no-one could accuse O.A.R. of ground-breaking originality, it's equally true that nobody ever went broke overestimating American college kids' appetites for good-time, feel-good Caribbean rhythms with a big rock backbeat. Especially on cuts like the hazy, fun-packed "That Was a Crazy Game of Poker," O.A.R. are more than happy to oblige.
