A difficult band to pin down, the Heavy Metal Kids shared a sense of theatricality and a love of Duane Eddy-inspired teen rebellion with contemporaneous glam acts like T. Rex and Sparks, but lead singer Gary Houlton's lyrics had a literary edge and satirical bite that was more in line with the caustic cynicism of Genesis' Peter Gabriel. Consequently, the band never really found its true audience. Though their debut, HEAVY METAL KIDS, won over a handful of music critics and some up-and-comers in the nascent punk movement, their second LP, ANVIL CHORUS, was roundly ignored at the time of its release. It is nonetheless a vivacious slice of mid-'70s rock and a worthy companion to its slightly more heralded predecessor.
