Title Note

The Vapors: David Fenton (vocals, guitar); Edward Bazalgette (guitar); Steve Smith (bass, background vocals); Howard Smith (drums).

In the world of memorable moments from early '80s one-hit-wonders, the Vapors' "Turning Japanese" is certainly one of the strangest. On the surface, it's engagingly simple new wave. Yet there's something strangely disquieting about the song, which connects love, mental hospitals, and masturbation. Perhaps even more odd is that the song's not the only worthwhile moment on the band's debut, NEW CLEAR DAYS. The set is a surprising marriage of pop smarts and themes of war, madness, isolation, and Japan. Because the Vapors' second (long since deleted) release was a far weaker effort, ANTHOLOGY is basically the whole of NEW CLEAR DAYS with a couple of extra tunes tacked on at the end. And with NEW CLEAR DAYS going in and out of print, ANTHOLOGY is very often the sole provider of the Vapors' strange brand of pop.
