Review

Muzik (12/98, p.75) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...As well as shaping punk, hip hop, ragga and jungle, many of the tracks here...helped plant the seeds of British black consciousness a decade before Public Enemy..."
Entertainment Weekly (10/30/98, p.117) - "...These two CDs...showcase Johnson's partnership with Dennis Bovell--one of reggae's greatest producer-arrangers--in full flower. With jazzy, mile-deep grooves and fearless urban truth-telling, they were England's own dub-wise Public Enemy. Essential." - Rating: Ac

Album Description

Aside from his explosive 1978 debut, DREAD BEAT AN' BLOOD (released on Heartbeat Records), Linton Kwesi Johnson's most important statements were made during his four-year tenure at Island Records. Johnson's Island recordings were masterful combinations of militant political convictions, journalistic verite, poetry, social critique, and deep roots music, with an ever-vigilant eye toward observing contemporary socio-political events and incorporating new musical techniques. A stunning two-disc set, INDEPENDANT INTAVENSHAN brings together the best cuts from Johnson's four seminal Island albums, FORCES OF VICTORY, BASS CULTURE, LKJ IN DUB, and MAKING HISTORY.
Johnson, a Jamaican-born British immigrant, brought a radical consciousness to bear on his music, merging unflinching social documentation with associative wordplay and inventing the style known as "dub poetry" in the process. Arranged chronologically, INDEPENDENT INTAVENSHAN allows one to chart Johnson's movement from deep roots and militant proclamations ("Fite Dem Back") through an increasingly sophisticated lyrical facility (Johnson begins to weave irony, anecdote, and black humor around his scathing commentary) and musical explorations (note the party ska vibe of "Di Black Petty Booshwah" or the groovy jazz of "Wat About Di Workin' Claas?"). Overall, this is an outstanding package, and a testament to one of reggae's most unique and powerfully affecting performers.
