Mesh Match For "The Anthology 1931-1968" CD by The Mills Brothers:

The Mills Brothers Artist Snapshot:

The Ohio-born Mills Brothers were a vocal quartet with roots going back to early jazz and barbershop harmony, but their innovative style, which initially utilized vocal approximations of instrumental sounds, was one of the key influences on '50s doo-wop. Harry, Donald, Herbert, and John Mills started performing in the '20s, accompanied only by a guitar, as they used their voices to imitate saxophone, trumpet, bass, et al. Their intricate harmonies and unique approach scored them hit after hit in the '30s and '40s, as well as roles in numerous movie musicals. In the '50s, they switched to a more conventional band-backed format and the huge hits ("Glow Worm," "Opus One," "Smack Dab in the Middle") continued. Various versions of the group continued performing into the '80s, until Donald became the only surviving member (he died in 1999).

Title Note

Includes liner notes by Peter Grendysa.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

This release tracks the Mills Brothers' prolific 37-year recording career. The first 26 years featured a quartet comprising the four brothers, John, Jr., Herbert, Harry, and Donald. In 1936 John Jr. died and was replaced by the boys' father, John Sr., who performed until retiring in 1957, when the group became a trio.

Their early sound begins distinctively with rousing, jazzy numbers like "Nobody's Sweetheart," their debut release of 1931. The furious scat vocals on this '20s pop tune are unique, sharp, and melodic. The Brothers combine forces with a young Ella Fitzgerald on "Dedicated to You," their harmonies floating behind her bell-toned vocals in a sonic miasma.
