The story of Anna Netrebko's rise to stardom reads like a Cinderella-style fairy tale. While a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, she took a job cleaning in the Mariinsky Theatre, home of the legendary Kirov Opera, in the hopes of learning and absorbing everything she could from rehearsals and performances. Eventually, she approached Valery Gergiev for an audition, and the formidable director of the company immediately recognized her enormous potential. From there came a succession of triumphs, first at the Kirov and then dazzling audiences and critics alike at renowned houses such as Covent Garden, the San Francisco Opera, and New York's Metropolitan Opera.

Netrebko's debut recital disc unequivocally announces that she is a vocal force to be reckoned with. She moves confidently through a well-chosen program displaying a purity of voice, dazzling technique, and commanding dramatic abilities that grab the listener's attention. The showpieces of the album--stunning accounts of arias by Donizetti and Bellini, featuring coloratura pyrotechnics aplenty--display the breadth of her talent to full effect. The overall result is a diva-like tour de force. Add in model-worthy looks and charisma in abundance, and it's clear that Netrebko has all that it takes to be a prima donna of the highest rank.
