While it often reeks of cop-out when a hitmaking diva claims to be inspired by all sorts of music, when Canadian singer-songwriter Anjulie makes such a claim, her music backs her up solidly. Although Anjulie's dance-infused, hook-heavy songs fit firmly into the pop radio zeitgeist of the late '00s, like Lily Allen or Santogold, the Canadian chanteuse creates collages drawing from soul, funk, electronica, new wave, and even art rock. Her career gained a boost when she hooked up with Jon Levine (brains of the similarly unpeggable soulsters Philosopher Kings) in 2007 and forged a formidable songwriting bond.
