Review

Q (3/99, p.93) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...the first on their own label and it's underpinned by this sense of indie liberty, as the pair retreat into the dance underground..."
Alternative Press (6/99, p.99) - 3 (out of 5) - "...ancient ethnic forgeries to tech-friendly tribalism to shadowy pop abstraction..."
The Wire (02/99, p.49) - "...Rougher and darker than earlier recordings, Anima Animus employs the trademark swooping harmonies and forced marches to whip up the tensions..."
CMJ (3/1/99, p.27) - "...[ANIMA ANIMUS] finds [The Creatures] fleshing out its sound with...techno embellishments, orchestral backgrounds and...rock rage. Still, The Creatures best assets remain Sioux's alluring croon [and] Budgie's primal rhythms...One of Sioux's most interesting offerings of the '90s."

Title Note

The Creatures: Siouxsie Sioux (vocals, koto-zither, toy piano); Budgie (guitar, organ, synthesizers, marimba, drums, percussion).

Additional personnel: Knox Chandler (guitar); Polly Chilcott (cello).

Producers: The Creatures, Steve Lyon, Warne Livesey, Steve Levine.

Ten years after BOOMERANG, the Creatures returned with a new album. Released on their own label, Sioux Records, ANIMA ANIMUS took the Creatures into new territory. The trademark percussion-heavy sound and Siouxsie's beautifully dark voice here remain the same, but Siouxsie and Budgie venture into electronica in a big way. The result is a deliciously dark and danceable collection of synth-heavy mini-masterpieces, showing that the Creatures were still capable of churning out a fresh sound after nearly two decades of albums.

Highlights include the dance-punk "Second Floor," with its sharp hooks and big-beat grooves, while some tracks, such as "Turn it On" and "Prettiest Thing," recall the sound of 1989's BOOMERANG. For the most part though, ANIMA ANIMUS marked a new and welcome departure for the husband and wife duo.
