Review

"THE ANGEL'S GAME...[is] a wickedly clever tale that turns readers into accomplices of [Zafon's] obsession with books, the quixotic characters who pen and peddle them and mystical Barcelona.....[T]he city makes the writer, and Zafón once more creates a tale -- a Harry Potter for grown-ups, a mammoth parable, an operatic morality play -- worthy of Barcelona."

"Ruiz Zafon provides, along with sex and death,...a pervasive sense of the childish joy of credulity--of surrendering to a story and letting it take you where it will, whatever the consequences....THE ANGEL'S GAME has emotional truth to burn because [he] uses every narrative technique in the book, high and...low....[H]e always falls back on storytelling. It's the master he serves, and the devil he knows."

"THE ANGEL'S GAME...is as much a literary marvel as its predecessor, [THE SHADOW OF THE WIND]. Like SHADOW, Zafon's latest novel is a masterfully written love affair with books and words as well as an obsessive tribute to passionate love....[Zafon's] visionary storytelling prowess is a genre unto itself."

"[T]his is good summer page-turning thanks to the vibrant secondary cast....[Protagonist David] Martin becomes embroiled in a murder mystery of sorts, but his skewed perspective and untrustworthy narration elevate it above a simple whodunit."

"Zafon proves himself a magician, vividly invoking bygone Barcelona while unscrolling a byzantine plot at breakneck pace....[H]e seems the perfect author to help prove that serious stuff can also be entertaining as hell."

Publisher's note

Offered a career-making writing deal from an enigmatic publisher in turbulent 1960s Barcelona, David Martin wonders about his capacity for writing a book for which the publisher claims others will live and die, an assignment throughout which David struggles with a forbidden love. By the author of The Shadow of the Wind.

In the turbulent and mysterious Barcelona of the 1920s, David Martin, a young novelist obsessed with a forbidden love, receives an offer from an enigmatic publisher to write a book like no other before--a book for which "people will live and die." In return, he is promised a fortune and, perhaps, much more.
Once again, the author of "The Shadow of the Wind" takes us into the gothic universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and creates a breathtaking adventure of intrigue, romance, and tragedy, and a dizzingly constructed labyrinth of secrets where the magic of books, passion, and friendship blend into a masterful story.

Annotation

Carlos Ruiz Zafon's long-awaited follow-up to his international bestseller THE SHADOW OF THE WIND contains many themes familiar to fans of that breakthrough novel--a writer haunted by a mysterious past, a mansion being slowly swallowed by shadows, secret dealings in the gothic alleys of Barcelona, and the ubiquitous specter of lost love. David Martin is the writer, wasting away his days churning out lurid stories under a pseudonym, while the walls of the home where he is sheltered steadily crumble and disintegrate around him. David has a single supporter, his friend and publisher Pedro Vidal, who seems to enjoy all the worldly success that David probably deserves, but lacks. David eventually surrenders to his hopelessness and accepts a writing assignment from a suspicious figure named Andrea Corelli, a task which will forever alter David's existence. As former associates begin to turn up dead, David recognizes an increasing confluence between his own dark past and the tale he is now concocting. He finds he must confront Corelli at the crossroads between the past and the present, fiction and reality, good and evil, to determine the eternal status of his soul.
