The musical fortunes of Antonio Vivaldi have come full circle. After glory in the early 18th century and obscurity at his death in 1741, the gradual restoration of his reputation as pioneer and master of the solo concerto began in the 19th century, followed by the great fame of 'The Four Seasons' and ultimately, in the 20th century, a reappraisal of the Red Priest as a master of all genres: sacred, secular, chamber, orchestral, vocal and operatic.

This disc features the beatific countertenor of Andreas Scholl in an imaginative program of sacred vocal music, with two concerti grossi mixed in for variety. There is much to discover. Nisi Dominus, a vesper psalm for solo voice, is a substantial and lovely piece which alternates vigorous instrumental movements with arias of serenity and repose--a scheme also followed in the exquisite Salve Regina, an ambitious Marian antiphon for alto and double string orchestra with two recorders and flute. What makes this program especially rewarding is the sheer beauty and sensitivity of Scholl's singing, poised and agile, expertly ornamented, superb in every aspect.
