Title Note

Personnel: Doc Watson (vocals, guitar, banjo); Jack Lawrence (guitar); Bela Fleck (banjo); Sam Bush (mandolin); Buddy Davis (bass instrument).

Americana Master, indeed. Doc Watson looms almost as large in American roots music as the Appalachian Mountains themselves. As an expressively soulful singer, a songwriter, and one of the best flatpicking guitarists ever, Watson stands above the masses. His greatest role, however, is that of musical nexus point. In his playing and song choices, one can trace the bloodlines of countless Americana subgenres from delta blues to Appalachian folk and from straight-up bluegrass to country gospel. Watson subsumes each into his millieu with impeccable ease. AMERICANA MASTERS SERIES: BEST OF THE SUGAR HILL YEARS collects sides from throughout his recording career, from the early '60s to the early '00s and each track displays a different shade of his mastery. Among the highlights: his haunting take on Dock Boggs's "Country Blues," the upbeat gospel of "Let the Church Roll On," the ridiculously pure guitar lines of "Wreck of the Number Nine," the delta blues mastery of "My Little Woman, You're So Sweet," and the wistful closer, "Your Lone Journey." Every track is a keeper and many feature a Who's Who of Appalachian and bluegrass guest stars including his son Merle, Marty Stuart, and Bryan Sutton. Compiling the definitive Watson experience in only 14 tracks is a herculean task, but AMERICANA MASTERS is a great start. A brief, ideal sampler for those new to Watson or those looking for some of his most memorable performances in one place.
