Review

"Like Steve Martin in his similarly engaging BORN STANDING UP, Ferguson tells the life story of a comedian without letting jokes get in the way....[He] admirably avoids wisecracks and instead goes for something like wisdom."

Annotation

Comedian Craig Ferguson may have been born in Scotland, but the best part of his life began in America, as he details in this memoir of his unique immigration experience. Ferguson grew up in Glasgow, which he notes was voted the "second-worst town in the United Kingdom," and while his childhood had some memorable moments, it was rather uneventful. His Scottish adult experience, marked by alcoholism, culminated when he determined to kill himself by driving off a bridge, only to be fortuitously deterred by a friend who baited him with more booze. But everything turned around for Ferguson when he hit the shores of America in 1993. After an aborted stint as a punk rock drummer, he found success as a comedian, screenwriter, and supporting sitcom star on THE DREW CAREY SHOW. By 2008, he was the host of his own late night talk show and the guest speaker at the White House Correspondents' Dinner, where he lectured before the president and caught a glimpse of the First Lady's panties. But Ferguson's proudest achievement of 2008 was becoming an American citizen, and as he continues to entertain and enlighten with his welcome blend of intelligence and wit, America should be equally as proud of him.

Comedian Craig Ferguson is best known for his role on THE DREW CAREY SHOW, and as the host of THE LATE,LATE SHOW. In AMERICAN ON PURPOSE, he hilariously describes his early days struggling in Glasgow, Scotland, and his later rise to stardom in the United States. Ferguson became a citizen of the United States in 2008, and he proudly and humorously shares his thoughts on America, and what it means to be American.

Short Desription

To numb the pain of failure, Craig Ferguson found comfort in drugs and alcohol, addictions that eventually led to an aborted suicide attempt. This memoir talks a red, white, and blue streak about everything that the Founding Fathers of America have feared.
