Title Note

A collection of 24 songs which were written and sung as a result of the great industrialization of America over the last 140 years. Includes liner notes and a new introduction by Irwin Silber.

For all the attention he received through the '50s and '60s as a rabble-rousing socialist provocateur, Pete Seeger has always been first and foremost a historian and musicologist. The liner notes of the 1956 release AMERICAN INDUSTRIAL BALLADS refer to the album as "a collection of 24 songs which were written and sung as a result of the great industrialization of America over the last 140 years." While there's definitely political content--the union anthem "Eight-Hour Day," which commemorates the Haymarket Riots, is among the more strident numbers--the focus is not on ideology but people. The lives of the workers, from factory wage-earners to miners and farmers, are what interests Seeger, and he sings their songs with both reverence and flashes of the sly humor the songs' originators intended. This one-disc reissue of a two-album set includes the original liner notes by historian Irwin Silber.
