Playwright Eugene O'Neill parleyed a tragic family life fraught with depression, alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide into powerful dramas that revolutionized American theater and won him three Pulitzers and the Nobel Prize. Directed by Ric Burns (ANSEL ADAMS) and narrated by actor Christopher Plummer, this episode of PBS' AMERICAN EXPERIENCE series examines O'Neill's life and art through archival material, interviews with admirers like playwright Tony Kushner and director Sidney Lumet, and dramatic readings of classic O'Neill plays by actors Al Pacino, Liam Neeson, and Robert Sean Leonard.
