A surprising late rally from a unique band who have received more than their fair share of criticism. Young always said he would return only when Crosby cleaned himself up. True to his word he did, and Crosby is probably the greatest survivor alive to tell his tale. His song "Compass" is one of the highlights, and was written while in prison. Stills, in particular, shines with the fully produced "That Girl" and the bluesy Stills/Young song "Drivin Thunder." Another rare Stills/Young collaboration is the powerful "Night Song" with the closing repeated lyric "why not keep on singing anyway." Why not indeed, an apt thought that closes an album that is better than we ever dared expect.
