After leaving his band Rodger Wilko, Texan country crooner/songwriter Zack Walther formed the Cronkites. AMBITION is the deceptively-titled result of the change in roster. The album's 10 tracks are actually a fairly straightforward spin on classic country, with a bit of rebellious roots-rock via the influence of bands like Blue Rodeo. For example, "Without One Sound," with its bombastic opening, distorted lead riff, and melodic choral squall, is an affecting four-plus minutes of alternative twang. But the record ultimately remains grounded by Walther's burly country vocals, which lend gritty southern authenticity to his tales of love and heartbreak.
