Elvis Presley was not just the biggest star of the rock-and-roll era, he was also the most versatile. Driving rock, jumping rhythm and blues, Dean Martin-style ballads and goofy pop all suited his musical tastes and talents. But Presley's favorite music was Gospel. He warmed up for recording sessions with gospel songs, and when not on tour was often at his home piano knocking out his favorite hymns. During his lifetime, Presley completed three gospel albums: 1960's HIS HAND IN MINE, 1967's HOW GREAT THOU ART (which won a Grammy for Best Sacred Performance), and 1971's HE TOUCHED ME.

These three albums, along with various inspirational album tracks, b-sides, alternate takes and live performances, are collected on the two-CD set AMAZING GRACE. This excellent collection not only spotlights Presley's remarkable talents but also serves as a solid introduction to the many styles of Southern gospel. The earliest recordings reflect Presley's fascination with such gospel vocal quartets as the Statesmen and the Swan Silvertones; tracks from HIS HAND IN MINE hew closer to the solo singing tradition of Mahalia Jackson; and the later tracks foreshadow the incorporation of rock and funk into popular gospel recordings.
