Announced at least twice with two different titles before it was finally released in the spring of 1996, the Posies' fourth album is an abrupt departure from the Seattle band's previous efforts. Where earlier albums FAILURE and DEAR 23 featured the angelic harmonies of singer/songwriters Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer over pretty, sometimes folk-tinged, '60s-derived power pop, AMAZING DISGRACE builds on the increased sonic aggression of its predecessor, 1993's FROSTING ON THE BEATER, turning Stringfellow and Auer's songs into loud, seething roars that somehow retain the sweet poppiness always at the band's core. Though self-explanatory titles like "Everybody Is a Fucking Liar" and "Hate Song" are as angry and pessimistic as their lyrics, the gentler, Neil Young-like "Ontario" and the Husker Du tribute "Grant Hart" turn that anger into catharsis. A revelation in a style of music that's occasionally sickeningly sweet, AMAZING DISGRACE broadens the emotional range of power pop.
