As Portugal's unofficial cultural ambassador to the world, Amalia Rodrigues epitomized much of what is unique and poignant about that country's ethos. In this concert, recorded in 1990 at New York City's Town Hall, Rodrigues covers a wide range of material, including her original song "Estranha Forma De Vida," and Fado classics such as "Coimbra" and "Maria Lisboa." Original folk tunes like "Malhao" and "Cancao Cigana," share the bill with covers such as "Half As Much" and "Canzone Per Te." Backed by a band that includes both traditional and Portuguese guitars, Amalia demonstrates the witty and appealing nature, tempered by a studied, evocative melancholy, that have made her an internationally lauded and respected singer.
