Chelsea's second album, known as NO ESCAPE upon its original 1980 US release, bears an apt title. Not alternative in the sense of the musical genre, the songs on ALTERNATIVE HITS are largely re-recordings, often very different, of Chelsea's earlier singles. The album was produced by Kit Lambert, the Who's original manager/producer, a rather odd choice considering that the Who's early singles don't seem to have been the influence on Chelsea's blunt, choppy, often strident punk rock that they were on the Jam or even the Sex Pistols.
Many of these new recordings, particularly "No Escape," sound less edgy than the original single versions, and Gene October's harsh voice doesn't always blend terribly well with the poppier backing. But ALTERNATIVE HITS is an interesting experiment by a band not often regarded for its experimental spirit.
