ALTAR acts as a Melvins family reunion of sorts as two of their most obvious sonic offspring--Sunn O))) and Boris--join together for a feast of slow-and-low heavy drone. Given both of their deconstructionist takes on the Melvins' stoner riffs and their abilities to find a strong meditative quality in feedback, the bands make a perfect match and their visions meld seamlessly. Guests include Soundgarden's Kim Thayil and the Sweet Hereafter's Jesse Sykes--the latter adding beautifully creepy female vocals.
