Esmeralda Santiago (Ana Maria Lagasca) moved to New York from a rural area of Puerto Rico. At the age of thirteen she was the elder sibling to, among others, a brother with a serious chronic infection in his foot. "Negi" became the interpreter for her mother as her English improved and together the family moved frequently, searching for care for the infected young boy. This Masterpiece Theater presentation is based on the memoirs of "Negi" Sangitago and weaves a fascinating tale of growing up Puerto Rican in 1960s America.
