Title Note

Elvis Presley has always been popular in Jamaica, particularly in the 1960s and 1970s when he was still an active presence on the international pop charts, so Trojan Records undoubtedly had little difficulty coming up with enough cover tracks of Presley songs in their vaults, and while not everything here works aside from its novelty appeal, there are enough little gems on All Shook Up to make it well worth a listen. Highlights include Sly & Robbie's clanging and chugging production of Chaka Demus & Pliers' take on "Don't Be Cruel," Slim Smith's intimate vocal on "Love Me Tender" (produced by Bunny Lee), Britain's Eugene Paul using his best Sam Cooke voice on "Frankie and Johnny" (which features an interesting rhythm track from producer Sydney Crooks), Lloyd Charmers' nuanced vocal on Kris Kristofferson's "For the Good Times" (Charmers also produced the track), and Junior Byles' magnificent version of "Fever" (produced by Lee "Scratch" Perry at Perry's famous Black Ark studio). Again, not everything here connects, but the tracks that do are pretty revelatory, bringing out new little rhythmic corners in these familiar songs. ~ Steve Leggett
