Title Note

Several French stars attempted to cross over into broader international success by recording in English. Usually these failed due to clumsy pronunciation and disinterest in American and British markets. Francoise Hardy was more successful than most, both artistically and commercially. Her accent is slight and her phrasing accomplished on these English rerecordings of 18 of her most popular mid-'60s tunes. One of these, "All over the World," actually cracked the British Top 20 in 1965. And she actually managed to release several albums of English material in the States, though she never took off commercially. These performances are respectable, but you're still better off with the original French versions. Her native tongue lends itself better to her romantic and melodramatic melodies and arrangements, which remain distinctly French in spite of their liberal debts to American girl group pop and production. The backing tracks are unchanged or only slightly altered on these re-recordings; the CD remastering is a bit awkward, placing her voice way up front. ~ Richie Unterberger

Hardy recorded frequently in languages other than French, and this nifty compilation gathers twenty of her English, Italian, and German tracks from 1963-67. This is not a totally superfluous collectible: Hardy never cut five of the songs in French, so the versions on this disc are the only ones available. In addition, some of the re-recordings of songs originally released in French utilize totally different backing tracks, sometimes to good effect. In particular, the Italian version of "Le Temps de L'Amour" (here retitled "L'eta Dell Amore") has a cool garagey snare drum and surfy guitar, and the Italian remake of "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour" has a gorgeous symphonic rearrangement with mournful harmonica and Gregorian-choir backup vocals. Other notable oddities are "Find Me a Boy" and "Catch a Falling Star," both produced by Tony Hatch (who directed Petula Clark's big hits); the Italian-only '64 cuts "Parlami Di Te" and "La Tua Mano," the latter of which has a passage lifted almost wholesale from Lesley Gore's "You Don't Own Me"; the zippy German-only girl-group number "Wer Du Bist"; and a nice German-only ballad, "Wenn Dieses Lied Erklingt" (when you can sound sexy singing in German, you're really good). Of course, the 1965 British Top 20 hit "All Over the World" is also here. Do not, by the way, confuse this with the 1988 compilation, also on Vogue, that's also called All Over the World (Vogue 670041), which consists entirely of English '60s recordings, and isn't nearly as interesting. ~ Richie Unterberger
