These Are Powers Artist Snapshot:

Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, These Are Powers consists of guitarist and singer Anna Barie, drummer Bill Salas, and bassist Pat Noecker. Like Noecker's former band Liars, These Are Powers blend avant-noise, dark, textural atmospherics, and tribal, often danceable rhythms for a unique sonic assault. Their EP, TARO TAROT, introduced the band's eerie yet aggressive sound. The band signed to Dead Ocean Records, which then released their 2007 full-length debut, TERRIFIC SEASONS, which also found them expanding their aesthetic deeper into electronic territory without losing any of their fiery edge.

Review

Spin (p.82) - "[A] thrilling, hyperpercussive collection of laptop ditties mixes so cleverly that they'll sound great ticking through earbuds..."
Alternative Press (p.133) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "ALL ABOARD FUTURE -- for all its dystopian doom -- somehow shakes out as the first truly modern punk record of 2009."

Title Note

This Brooklyn-by-way-of-Chicago trio practice an avant branching out of punk-cum-electro that they've described as "ghost punk." And while FUTURE isn't conventionally haunting, its unpredictable glitches and arhythmic tendencies, particularly when buoyed by Anna Barie's dissonant yelps, have a way of staying in your subconscious. Like their peers in Mahjongg and Gang Gang Dance, Powers create atmosphere out of repetitive and often noisy ambience, relying on a sort of recklessly postmodern tribalism. And their tactics are particularly effective on droners like "Light After Sound," which evokes a creepily lo-fi take on Massive Attack with all the lounge-y bombast stripped away.
