Turkish composer/multi-instrumentalist Omar Faruk Tekbilek has created in ALIF: LOVE SUPREME a musical document as grand and beautiful as its name. Using traditional Turkish music as a palette, Tekbilek branches out to incorporate styles from everywhere in the Middle East and beyond, including strains of Sufi, Gypsy, and Spanish music, and healthy doses from the Balkans and North Africa. Adding fire to the pan-Middle Eastern/Mediterranean crucible is a cadre of remarkable musicians, hailing from Israel, Spain, Iran, and Greece, among other places. Also contributing is percussionist Steve Shahen, who gives the album its intense rhythmic foundation.
Though world music purists may bristle at the inclusion of lush synthesizer on traditional Turkish songs, or the appearance of flamenco guitarist Jose Rodrigues Munoz, ALIF is--as its title states--about love of all things: life, music, and people. Such all-encompassing sentiments radiate from the timeless melodies, pulsing rhythms, and genre-blending combinations here, helping create a sensual and inspiring journey into the heart of world music.
