Review

"[A] sparkling novella. Laced with the subtlest of observations and the wryest of wit..." [Starred review.]

"In its generosity of spirit, its shaped and contained fury, ALFRED AND EMILY is also an extraordinary, unconventional addition to Lessing’s autobiography. She’s said she has written her last book...but there isn’t the slightest tone of valediction or summing up here. That’s why she remains so vital: even in old age, she sounds as fierce and passionate as a girl."

Publisher's note

A deeply personal meditation on family, parents and children, war and memory takes the Nobel Prize-winning author of The Grass Is Singing back to her childhood in Southern Africa and the lives, both fictional and factual, that her parents led in the wake of the devastation of the Great War. 20,000 first printing.

Annotation

Doris Lessing follows up her Nobel Prize in Literature by returning to familiar territory--the unhappy life of her parents, a crippled British soldier and long-suffering nurse living in Rhodesia, as chronicled in her autobiography UNDER MY SKIN--and treating it with an inspired and complex conceit: Lessing splits ALFRED AND EMILY into two parts, one part is a novella that imagines a fuller, happier life for her parents, the other part, a memoir, deals with her parents' psychic wounds from the First World War. Together, the fiction and nonfiction fuse to form a bracing symbiotic work, at turns redemptive and brutal. ALFRED AND EMILY shows Lessing, as fierce at 88 as ever she was, still grappling with the themes of family breakdown, social justice, and war.
