Thrice Artist Snapshot:

Post-hardcore outfit Thrice hails from Orange County, California, one of the epicenters of America's punk scene. Thrice's 2000 debut, IDENTITY CRISIS, mixed elements of punk, screamo, and pop with progressive tendencies. Subsequent albums, such as 2002's THE ILLUSION OF SAFETY and 2005's VHEISSU, found the group moving toward a more progressive, musically complex style. Thrice supported these albums with extensive touring, hitting the road with such acts as Samiam, Further Seems Forever, and Coheed & Cambria. In '07 and '08, Thrice released two albums of live material, and a four-part conceptual project entitled THE ALCHEMY INDEX.

Review

Alternative Press (p.143) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[T]aken as a whole, Thrice have managed to convert an ultra-abstract concept into a cohesive and innovative collection."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.46) - "[T]his is organic stuff, the work of a band that has stripped itself of any restrictive genre and now simply concerns itself with making American music. A delight."

Title Note

Post-hardcore foursome Thrice seems to revel in pushing boundaries and overturning expectations. The second two-disc installment of THE ALCHEMY INDEX answers VOLS. 1 & 2 (FIRE & WATER) from the first set with VOLS. 3 & 4 (EARTH & AIR). There's little evidence of the ferocious screamo aesthetic that characterized releases like THE ILLUSION OF SAFETY; instead AIR & EARTH ventures into mostly acoustic, highly melodic territory. The tight, technically complex instrumental prowess of the band is still on display, but the mood is much more atmospheric. The songs veer from ethereal and psychedelic to a more conventional folk or singer-songwriter vein (this is especially true of the tracks on the EARTH disc), but the whole adds up to an impressive, original showing from one of the genre's innovators.

Though not your typical Thrice album with chants that will melt your head off, this softer approach to the emo/punk scene is well accomplished. So many attempts have been made by certain Punk bands but never any as good as Thrice. This album gives them a different sound. I would say radiohead meets metal.
