Distributor Note

Gluck's other tale of enduring love is in the face of impossible odds is less well known than his retelling of the Orpheus myth, but Alceste is no less powerful; indeed the lead role was unforgettably immortalised by Maria Callas and Jane Baker. Ann Sofie von Otter shows herself worthy of such comparison with a performance of great, controlled dignity in Robert Wilson's spare and haunting production. With the Gluck specialist Sir John Eliot Gardiner in the pit with his own period-
instrument orchestra, this is Gluck for the modern age.

Product Notes

Czech composer Christophe Willibald Gluck left an indelible impact on the opera, helping to move the genre out of the Baroque world and into the Classical one. His 1776 French opera ALCESTE is often thought to be his most innovative work -- one of intense passion and emotion. This video features Robert Wilson's magnificent production of the opera. Staged at the Theatre Musical De Paris, it features the historically accurate talents of a period instrument ensemble and the English Baroque Soloists. They are beautifully aided by the singing of the Monteverdi Choir and a troupe of dancers.
