Live albums are not always the best means of representing a musician's body of work; often they are best suited to longtime fans already familiar with that artist's studio work. This is not the case with Aimee Mann's LIVE AT ST. ANN'S WAREHOUSE, however. In fact, Mann's literate, clever songs, which draw equally on roots rock, indie rock, Beatle-esque pop, and a folky singer/songwriter tradition, lend themselves particularly well to the intimacy and immediacy of a concert setting, making this DVD/CD package one of her best overall offerings. Mann's talented, tight-knit backing band doesn't hurt matters, either.

Lyrically, melodically, and structurally, Mann's songcraft rarely disappoints. Characterized on one hand, by a confessional, soul-searching honesty, and, on the other by a knack for metaphor (the album's opener, "The Moth," is a perfect example), her songs never feel arbitrary or forced. The set contains "Wise Up" and "Save Me" from the MAGNOLIA soundtrack (which helped bring her wider public recognition), but the emotional edge of tunes like "Stupid Thing" and the achingly melancholic "4th of July" is equally compelling. The DVD contains the entire concert (with three more songs than the CD), interviews, a slide show, and behind-the-scenes footage.
