Review

"This is the story of Harvard told through its students and through the author's increasing bemusement at some of them and at the nature of the course he took. He also sets the scene brilliantly, capturing an essence of HBS that is part cult, part psychological morass, part hothouse....For anyone planning to attend this remarkable institution, Delves Broughton's book is invaluable."

"[Philip Delves] Broughton makes a delightfully clueless guide....Luckily, Broughton makes a better writer than corporate drone."

Publisher's note

An assessment of the teaching methods used by Harvard Business School to promote students into the elite ranks of the business world reveals how the university's curriculum focuses on analyses of actual business scenarios that teach sophisticated strategies in such areas as accounting, beta, and leveraging. 50,000 first printing.

Annotation

Worn out by his London journalism job and seeking a gateway to a more refined life, Philip Delves Broughton applies to Harvard Business School and, to his surprise, is accepted. In his fish-out-of-water memoir, he describes his uneasy entry into the high-octane and massively privileged world of the business elite where hedge-fund whiz kids and venture capitalists land jobs at Fortune 100 companies. Broughton, however, doesn't like math or spreadsheets, and is, he admits, a little lazy, and he finds himself ill suited to the feverish greed of his capitalist comrades. AHEAD OF THE CURVE provides a gentle critique of the Harvard Business School culture, though also poking fun at its unwitting author.
