Recorded at RKO Pathe Studios, New York, New York on July 18, 1961. Includes liner notes by Charles Fox.

With only guitar and string bass as accompaniment, these 11 recordings from 1961 are distinctly intimate, the spare instrumentation proving that less is more. This setting spotlights Vaughan's vocals as they were meant be heard.

Sarah Vaughan's voice is multi-textured as she varies the weight of her delivery on these standards. She has a graceful power, using a variety of vocal techniques. Modulating up and down the scales, and sustaining notes for ecstatic intervals she shapes "Ill Wind," with sensuousness. Radiant and unfaltering on all these songs, Vaughan possesses an unimpeachable technical mastery, and uses her full-bodied keening to underscore the torchy and erotic undertones of these ballads.
