Review

JazzTimes (p.136) - "The extravagantly flowing, cresting and receding solo piano versions of 'Summertime' and 'You Taught My Heart To Sing' are especially nice to hear again."
Record Collector (magazine) (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The opening title track is a scintillating big band version of the Mongo Santa Maria classic featuring the Latin Allstars..."

Title Note

Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (saxophone); Terence Blanchard (trumpet); Christian McBride, Charnet Moffett, Stanley Clarke (bass guitar); Lewish Nash, Eric Harland, Al Foster (drums); Latin All Stars, Bobby Hutcherson.

AFRO BLUE is a compilation album collecting McCoy Tyner's work for the Telarc Label. The work dates from the late 1990s and 2000s, and while the music may lack the ferocity of some of Tyner's classic dates from the '60s and '70s, it doesn't lack for dazzling musicianship and Tyner's inimitable touch. The Latin-tinged numbers ("Blue Bossa;" "Carriba") are standouts, as are the tracks from 2004's ILLUMINATIONS and his sessions with Stanley Clarke and Al Foster.
