Title Note

Personnel: John Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); McCoy Tyner (piano); Jimmy Garrison (bass); Elvin Jones (drums).

Recorded live in Europe in 1963 and in Stockholm, Sweden on October 22, 1963. Includes liner notes by Benny Green and Norman Granz.

Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1993, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).

Directly preceding his two groundbreaking albums CRESCENT and A LOVE SUPREME, AFRO BLUE IMPRESSIONS, a live double album from 1963, is a remarkable document. Featuring McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, the record finds Coltrane breaking the constraints of form, finding and subverting the limitations of his instrument, pushing at the very frontiers of sound. In "My Favorite Things" for example, Coltrane uses his soprano sax to warp the Roger and Hammerstein classic into an excursion through unknown spheres--unfolding modal patterns and showering bursts of melodic line.

The instrumentalists play powerfully throughout, creating large structural boxes for Coltrane to play in and around. The breaks scattered throughout the set, in which Jones's drumming provides a rhythmic counterpart to Coltrane's improvisations, are especially noteworthy. In the coda of "I Want To Talk About You," for example, Coltrane's sax becomes a voice at once primitive and lucidly advanced, pouring out a ceaseless flow of phrases--freely stressed, polytonal, in constant chromatic flux. Each number is inventive and awe-inspiring. This live album captures the genius of John Coltrane at its most incandescent, and comes highly recommended.
