Review

"There is so much interesting material worth reading in this book....[Kilcullen] tells many good stories and his analysis is never less than rigorous, and also properly set in the relevant political contexts..."

"THE ACCIDENTAL GUERRILLA is not an easy book...., [but it] is essential....What is needed, [Kilcullen] points out, is to develop strategies that deal both with global terrorism and conflicts at the local level."

"THE ACCIDENTAL GUERRILLA is a master class in counterinsurgency from a man who, as much as anyone, is responsible for recent successes in Iraq."

"[A]s Kilcullen explains, anything done to win over the population [in the Middle East] is really an offensive move....The Iraq war has been al-Qaida's greatest success, nurturing anti-Americanism around the globe and dragging Western soldiers into Muslim nations where their outdated tactics will inadvertently serve to recruit increasing numbers of local, accidental guerrillas."

Annotation

David Kilcullen is one of the world's most influential experts on counterinsurgency and modern warfare. A Senior Counterinsurgency Advisor to General David Petraeus in Iraq, his vision of war dramatically influenced America's decision to rethink its military strategy in Iraq and implement "the surge."
Now, in The Accidental Guerrilla, Kilcullen provides a remarkably fresh perspective on the War on Terror. Kilcullen takes us "on the ground" to uncover the face of modern warfare, illuminating both the big global war (the "War on Terrorism") and its relation to the associated "small wars" across the globe: Iraq, Afghanistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Chechnya, Pakistan and North Africa. Kilcullen sees today's conflicts as a complex pairing of contrasting trends: local social networks and worldwide movements; traditional and postmodern culture; local insurgencies seeking autonomy and a broader pan-Islamic campaign. He warns that America's actions in the war on terrorism have tended to conflate these trends, blurring the distinction between local and global struggles and thus enormously complicating our challenges. Indeed, the US had done a poor job of applying different tactics to these very different situations, continually misidentifying insurgents with limited aims and legitimate grievances (whom he calls "accidental guerrillas") as part of a coordinated worldwide terror network. We must learn how to disentangle these strands, develop strategies that deal with global threats, avoid local conflicts where possible, and win them where necessary.
Colored with gripping battlefield experiences that range from the jungles and highlands of Southeast Asia to the mountains ofthe Afghanistan-Pakistan border to the dusty towns of the Middle East, The Accidental Guerrilla will, quite simply, change the way we think about war. This much anticipated book will be a must read for everyone concerned about the war on terror.

In the category of least-coveted jobs in America, serving as General David Petraeus's Senior Counterinsurgency Advisor in Iraq has to be near the top of the list. Let us all give thanks to David Kilcullen for not only filling that role but excelling in it. Kilcullen is changing the way the "war on terrorism" is being fought by demonstrating that America's mere participation in such a conflict marks a resounding victory for the opposition, whose overall goal is to develop and nurture anti-American sentiments around the globe and create more "accidental guerrillas," insurgents who resist the presence of intruders, but are otherwise non-combative. Kilcullen concisely analyzes the United States' current military strategy in relation to the myriad of conflicts taking place worldwide, in the Middle East, Pakistan, the Philippines, Chechnya, and various locales in Africa, which need to be evaluated and linked in order to determine the extent of their impact. According to him, America's military actions of the past decade have conflated local and global hostilities, in turn creating the intimidating military complexity of our current situations in Iraq and Afghanistan and exacerbating global hostility towards the United States.
