Drummer Danfis Prieto breathes fresh life into the relatively bland world of contemporary jazz on ABSOLUTE QUINTET. To begin with, Prieto assembles an unusual instrumental line-up, including saxophone, violin, cello, and keyboards, while the music blends categories by marrying funky fusion to avant-minded juxtapositions and soloing. Yet, as befits a session featuring a drummer as leader, ABSOLUTE QUINTET is intensely rhythmic, with polyrhythms scattered in every direction, and Prieto's octopus-limbed kit work shining throughout.
